Botox vs. Fillers: Uses, Effects, and Differences
Botox is one of the most common and the most popular of all cosmetic treatments. Why? How does it work? And how does it compare to other treatment options like dermal fillers? Today, we’re taking a look
The Purposes of Botox and Dermal Fillers
Our faces are important. Through expressions of our eyes and mouths, we show and tell the world what we’re thinking about. Naturally, the world spends a lot of time looking back at our faces and paying close attention to them.
Sometimes, we become uncomfortable with what the world sees there. We want to look our best, and for some people, the lines that appear as we grow through life don’t seem to be our best.
Those very same expressions we make can cause the skin above our facial muscles to wrinkle and crease, and the longer they’re left that way, the more they become a part of us. They make more apparent just how long we’ve been around!
The sun and gravity are always doing their thing, too, and our skin can feel it. Over time, a loose or saggy appearance can develop because of the constant effects of those forces.
Modern cosmetic technology makes it possible to rejuvenate the appearance of skin that has started to experience these effects, though.
How Botox Works
In the case of the effects caused by our own muscles, the treatment of choice is Botox.
Medicinenet.com explains what Botox is and how it works on a basic level:
“Botox is a brand name of a toxin produced by the bacterium Clostridium botulinum. There are other brand names for botulinum, such as Xeomin. In large amounts, this toxin can cause botulism, which you probably associate with food poisoning. Despite the fact that one of the most serious complications of botulism is paralysis, scientists have discovered a way to use it to human advantage. Small, diluted amounts can be directly injected into specific muscles causing controlled weakening of the muscles.”
Because of the nature of Botox, initial reactions to learning about it can include some fear, but it’s important to remember that the treatment methods that use it are very safe. It’s so safe, in fact, that during the past two decades that it’s been available, about 11 million vials of it have been produced and sold.
It’s kind of like how most of us use fire in our kitchens every day for our benefit. A lot of fire can be very dangerous, but a small, controlled flame handled with skill provides great benefits.
That’s how it is with Botox. By carefully injecting very small amounts of diluted botulinum toxin, we can train the muscles in specific areas of a patient’s face not to contract. That makes it harder for wrinkles to form and appear.
This contributes to a much more youthful appearance by treating stubborn wrinkles that other methods just can’t seem to get rid of.
After a few months, the temporary paralytic effects wear off, and a new injection is needed to maintain the desired appearance. The upshot is that over time, the muscles will “learn” not to contract as much.
How Dermal Fillers Work
Botox addresses wrinkles caused by muscular expressions, but what does it do about damage caused by the sun and gravity?
In those cases, Botox isn’t the optimal treatment, and in fact, won’t have much of an effect at all.
What does work are dermal fillers, which are exactly what they sound like: injections of tissue material that fill in the spaces caused by wrinkles.
These injections create a smoother appearance, and work on wrinkles that Botox can’t address.
They’re typically made of hyaluronic acid. Don’t let the word “acid” scare you. Hyaluronic acid is a natural substance that already makes up part of your skin, which also makes it an excellent choice for wrinkle treatments.
That’s especially true because it retains moisture very well. Not only does it fill in wrinkles, but it helps your skin look healthy, too!
Keep in mind another excellent advantage of this type of dermal filler: if you don’t like the results, it can be easily adjusted. There’s even an enzyme that can dissolve it completely for a total do-over.
